How to Help the Victims of Typhoon Yolanda

Watching the news about typhoon Yolana is too devastating.
We had to change the channel last night because the grief over our kababayans' plight was too much too handle.

If you've been looking for ways to help out, I compiled a few links below for organizations that you might want to donate to.

Will not accept old clothing as they already have too much on hand

Yabu House of Katsu: Dine for a Cause
100% of their profits in all their branches on November 13 will be donated to those affected by Typhoon Yolanda. It's a win-win situation. You get your Yabu katsu fix and still get to help those in need. Good job Yabu!

If for some reason you can't give cash donations, GMA lists down toiletries and other things you can send to help out the victims of Yolanda.

A few reminders:

  • I read that there are more than enough clothes donated to this cause (via Red Cross) so please try to send food, water or cash instead. 
  • GMA Operation Bayanihan is still welcome to accept clothing donations but please do not send costumes or party dresses or worn out clothing. 
  • Please do not donate expired goods or goods that are about to expire.
  • If we cannot give in cash or kind, we can also give our time by volunteering 
Will be adding to this list once I find more avenues for donation or relief efforts.

The Irony: Attending A Globe + Nuffnang Event Without My Phone

Before I really get to the main idea of this post, I'd just  like to say that Nuffnang and Globe are the best! Globe's Go Bigger Movie Night was awesome! They gave out goodie bags (I was secretly hoping a free phone was inside with a free data plan!), had a free photo printing station where you can print your instagram photos and the highlight of the day, they gave away a Huawei Smartphone! I really wanted to participate in all these activities if only I hadn't forgotten my phone that day.


So there I was, in the midst of a Globe event, without my Globe phone. I felt like a caveman. While everyone else was taking advantage of all the perks modern technology had to offer, I had to content myself with watching other people, staring at Chris Hemsworth's Thor movie poster (which gets really old after a while no matter how handsome he was) and shifting uncomfortably from one foot to another. The truth is, a day without my phone was in some ways, crippling and in others, liberating.

Love Pixar's Stories? Pixar's got tips for storytelling.

So I saw a link to this blog earlier today.

It's a compilation of Pixar's 22 Rules of Storytelling originally tweeted by Pixar's Story Artist, Emma Coates
My favorite is #19: "Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them out of it are cheating."

I've read a few books where, after the main character finds himself/herself in a difficult situation, someone else coincidentally swoops in to save the day. This is okay if it happens once, but after a few times having the same thing happen, you begin to question the integrity of the character. You ask, what happened? After all the build up, suddenly the protagonist is lacking in strength to overcome his/her greatest adversity?

This is one of Pixar's strengths. When you see a situation come on, despite the difficulty, the protagonist persists and finds a solution. And despite being an adult, Pixar's movies bring the child out of me. It simplifies everything and yet brings profound realizations.
